      The Heat and Frost Insulation Apprenticeship program is a five(5) year program requiring  a minimum of 1600 hours of on the job training. In addition there is 160 hours of supplemental class related training each year for five years. A Heat and Frost Insulator Apprentice receives class instruction in all phases of work that falls within the realm of this trade. A system of six month rotation among employers is used to give apprentices a diversified experience with other journeyman/woman and familiarize them with different methods of application and types of materials used by various companies. First Aid, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection and Scaffold User courses are implemented throughout the curriculum as well as trade specific math and material application.

Working Conditions;

As a Heat and Frost Insulator, a person must be willing to work under almost limitless conditions, including but not limited to;

  • Sub-zero temperatures- Outside in the winter time to artificial cold inside (refrigeration).
  • EXTREME hot temperatures- Outside in the Summer to artificial Heat inside (Hot Boiler Rooms).
  • And of course we are in Seattle so RAIN any time of the year.

One must be available for work away from home for periods of a couple of days up to a year or more, usually home on the weekends, as our territory covers 20 counties in the State of Washington. The work and conditions tend to be dusty as compared to most trades.

You Must have:
  • A valid Washington State drivers license
  • A copy of your Social Security card
  • A copy of your High School diploma or GED (required before you advance to Journeyman/woman status)

You are also encouraged to bring:

  • An updated Resume
  • Any letters of reference
  • Any trade related certifications ( CPR/ First Aid, Scaffold builder/User card, Forklift card etc.)

Additional Information;

      The Heat and Frost Insulators Apprenticeship program is operated  by a Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC), a Labor, management Committee which oversees the apprenticeship and recruitment. The recruitment, employment, and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin or gender.
 
Suggested Courses;
 
       Courses that would be helpful include; algebra, geometry, Mechanical Drawing, Blueprint Reading, Wood, metal and electrical shop work.
