Signatory contractors prepared to support projects across Washington.Firestop Is Life Safety Work
- Properly installed firestop systems help maintain the fire-resistance rating of walls, floors, joints, and penetrations. This work plays a critical role in limiting the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through a building.
What is FRMA?
- Fire-Resistant Materials Applicator. In Washington State, 24-hour certified FRMA workers are shown the basics to install firestop systems and fire-resistant materials in accordance with approved systems, project specifications, and applicable code requirements.
Why Union Trained and Certified Firestop Matters
While Washington State requires a minimum of 24 hours of approved training for Fire Resistive Material Applicators, Local 7 sets the industry standard through the State's only registered Firestop Apprenticeship Program. Every Local 7 Firestop Journeyman has successfully completed this rigorous three-year apprenticeship, combining extensive classroom instruction, hands-on training, manufacturer-specific certifications, and real-world field experience.
Training does not end upon completion of the apprenticeship. To maintain and advance their knowledge, Local 7 Firestop Journeymen are required to complete a minimum of eight hours of continuing education annually. This ongoing training ensures our members remain current with evolving building codes, industry standards, installation methods, manufacturer requirements, and emerging fire protection technologies.
