Local 7 Authorized to Provide Fire-Resistant Materials Applicator (FRMA) Training for Firestopping
Renton, WA – The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 7 Training Trust has been officially authorized by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) to provide Fire-Resistant Materials Applicator (FRMA) training for firestopping.
This 24-hour certification course is required under the Washington Administrative Code (WAC 296-156) for applicators working with fire-resistive materials in designated building classifications. The program is designed to ensure workers are trained in proper installation, inspection, and maintenance of firestop systems that are essential to life safety and building integrity.
Local 7’s instructors—Greg Shurts, Kevin Greene, Duke Wilson, and Jose Hughes—have been approved by L&I to deliver this certification course. The training combines classroom learning with hands-on application to prepare workers for real-world conditions and compliance with state standards.
Classes will be held at the Local 7 Training Center located at Renton Technical College, Building L. A schedule of courses for 2025–2026 will be announced in the coming weeks. Apprentices, journeymen, and contractors interested in certification are encouraged to contact Local 7 Training Center for enrollment details.
“The Fire-Resistant Materials Applicator certification is an important step forward in protecting workers and communities,” said Brian Kinsman, Apprenticeship Coordinator for Local 7. “We are proud to offer this training and to continue our commitment to providing the highest quality education for our members and industry partners.”
